Gulangyu was once occupied by the British and here they built bright, lavish and grandiose colonial buildings. This delightful island is paved with cobblestone paths and skinny, curvy and steep alleyways. The ferry-only access is a perk, since no cars or vehicles are allowed here - a great place to escape the obnoxious honking every minute or so in the city center. It is truly magical here, even KFC was a sight for sore eyes...and Micky D's, too (they seem to go hand-in-hand EVERYWHERE. Damn you corporate globalization!)

*Best Part* On any given nice day, besides the romantic cafes, expensive, overpriced restaurants and souvenir shops, you will come across at least 5-10 brides and grooms wearing tacky matching outfits (no joke, blue/blue, white/white, pink/pink) posing for photographs. Then you get to stand there, and stare, take pictures of them with your own digital camera, and be creepy. This.........is Gulangyu.
